Iridophores

Iridophores, like chromatophores, contribute to dermal patterning in cephalopods [23,24]. It is therefore surprising that, in contrast to the chromatophores, iridophores are apparently devoid of light-detecting molecules. This apparent lack of photoreceptive molecules obviates their potential sensitivity to ambient light.

Cuttlefish exhibit extraordinary ability to rapidly change color, pattern and texture, for camouflage or communication, with pigmented chromatophores and reflective iridophores in their multi-layered skin, a mechanism being engineered into smart clothing. Cuttlefish produce ink to evade predators and regenerate lost limbs after attack.Two types of iridophores are recognized, fluorescent iridophores and basal, non-fluorescent iridophores, the latter of which might function as a mirror, amplifying the omnidirectional fluorescence. The strong intensity of the fluorescence (quantum yield of 12.5%) indicates this to be a highly effective mechanism, unique among tetrapods.
