Liszt etudes

Liszt's musical precocity can be measured by the fact that at the age of thirteen he had begun work on what was to become his Op.6, the Etude en douze exercices. After later revisions this became the Grandes Études of 1837 and, with simplifications, the Études d' exécution transcendante of 1851.

The commonly used English title Transcendental Etudes fails to capture the flavor of the original French title, Études d'exécution transcendante ("Etudes of transcendental execution"). These are, despite all the fireworks, true etudes, concerned with specific technical issues, and they were dedicated to the master of the piano study, Carl Czerny.Liszt then elaborated on these pieces considerably, and the far more technically difficult exercises called the Douze Grandes Études (Twelve Grand Studies), S.137 were then published in 1837. The Transcendental Études are revisions of his Douze Grandes Études.
