Oct 9, 2019 · Chert is a sedimentary rock composed mostly of the mineral chalcedony—cryptocrystalline silica in crystals of submicroscopic size. This type of sedimentary rock can form in parts of the deep sea where the tiny shells of siliceous organisms are concentrated, or elsewhere where underground fluids replace sediments with silica. Knapping is the shaping of flint, chert, obsidian, or other conchoidal fracturing stone through the process of lithic reduction to manufacture stone tools, strikers for flintlock firearms, or to produce flat-faced stones for building or facing walls, and flushwork decoration.
